Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) caused global upheaval in communities due to its rapid spread and deadly contagion. The problem addressed in this study was the sudden impact COVID-19 had on children's predictable routines and ways of living. Through the lens of Urie Bronfenbrenner's ecological systems theory, the purpose of this qualitative methodology and comparative case study design examined children's perception of COVID-19. The influence the pandemic had on children's social-emotional wellness, development, resiliency, and coping abilities was of focus. Through purposeful and snowball sampling, a sample size of 14 residing in Southern California participated in semi-structured interviews. Of the 14 participants, seven were children and the other seven were parents. By way of thick-rich datasets, a two-step analysis allowed for case data investigation and cross-case pattern inquiry. For this study, NVIVO software aided the data's organization to identify codes, themes, and categories. Findings indicated consistency within existing literature and a clear parallel to Bronfenbrenner's theoretical framework, signifying that children's wellness, adaptability, coping, and resiliency are shaped by the environmental systems and the relationships within them. Implications highlight that though young children have been impacted, they can bounce back, are resilient, may go with the flow, and/or adapt and cope with the adversities encountered. However, it was found that the older the child may be, the more impact experienced, due to having a greater sense of normalcy pre-pandemic. In addition, although there were negative outcomes brought on by the pandemic, there were positive experiences encountered, with family time being notably highlighted. The importance of this study signifies children are capable of being partners in research, providing their viewpoint. In return, this partnership helps bridge the research gap, as young children's voices are often missing/omitted in research.
