The problem this study sought to address is that it is not known how organizational leaders develop and maintain commitment to goals in nonprofit organizations. The purpose of this study was to explore and identify how nonprofit organizational leaders in the Columbia, South Carolina, region develop and maintain commitment to organizational goals. Based on the results of this study, the following conclusion was drawn. For leaders to successfully influence (i.e., develop and maintain) commitment to organizational goals in nonprofit organizations, leaders ought to abide by the following guidelines: (a) ensure organizational goals are effective in stimulating goal commitment through setting specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and time-related goals and by getting employees to buy into those goals; (b) develop commitment through constant in- person communication by being servant leaders and by ensuring adequate resources for goal achievement; and (c) maintain goal commitment already developed by continuing to ensure adequate resources for goal achievement, by keeping employees accountable, and by constantly communicating with the employees. Additionally, as a general factor of positive influence on goal commitment development and maintenance, leaders should consider constant casting of organizational purpose (mission, vision, and core values) to all staff using visually appealing and organizationally branded documents. Overall, this study contributed to solving the problem identified in the literature through its results, which provided unique and applicable knowledge for leaders to develop and maintain commitment to goals-a vital but underexplored tool nonprofit organizations use to accomplish organizational purpose.
