The COVID-19 pandemic has affected every facet of life in the United States. In response, policymakers and health practitioners have sought to understand differences in perceptions of public health risks and subsequent responses to public health mandates. The current study explored the relationship between adult attachment styles and adherence behaviors to public health mandates. One hundred seventy-three participants were selected based on age and geographical location eligibility and recruited via social media platforms. Using a quantitative correlational (mediation model) approach, participants responded to self-report questionnaire measures addressing attachment style (i.e., Experiences in Close Relationships Scale; Brennan et al., 1998), perceived risk of contracting COVID-19 (Segal et al., 2021), and COVID-19 regulation adherence (Segal et al., 2021). Results indicated that perception of health risks posed by the COVID-19 pandemic mediated the relationship between attachment styles and adherence behaviors to public health mandates, specifically, anxious and avoidant attachment styles. These findings shed light on how individual differences, such as insecure attachment, can affect responses to traumatic events. Future studies could expand the scope of this study to incorporate local and regional specific public health guidelines, assess for more relevant health behaviors (e.g., COVID-19 vaccination, booster shots), and test for the mediating effects of other extraneous variables (e.g., individual substance use behaviors, type of employment, cultural background).
