Assembling nanomaterials into highly ordered structures can lead to novel collective properties, providing a promising approach for the fabrication of advanced functional materials, such as metamaterials.In this dissertation, we focus on the self-assembly and crystallization of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and nanostructures in two- and three-dimensions (2D and 3D) by using synthetic polymers, which are responsive to multiple-stimuli.Polyethylene glycol (PEG) can exhibit remarkable properties which readily vary with salt, pH level, and temperature. We used PEG for grafting AuNP surfaces to direct the assembly of these AuNPs.Spherical AuNPs functionalized with PEG are assembled and ordered into face-centered-cubic (fcc) superlattices using electrolyte and temperature controls. Interestingly, the interactions between PEG-functionalized AuNPs are strengthened as temperature increases, resulting in a closer packing of fcc structure.The interpolymer complexation method through hydrogen bonding between polyacrylic acid (PAA) and grafted PEG on AuNPs, is employed to induce the crystallization of AuNPs. Using solution small-angle X-ray scattering, the 3D assembly of nanostructures have been investigated.Non-spherical gold nanostructures, including gold nanorods (AuNRs), gold nanotriangles (AuNTs), and gold nanooctahedra (AuNOh) have been also studied to create anisotropic nanostructure assemblies at the liquid/vapor interface and in the aqueous solution. All the anisotropic AuNPs (AuNRs, AuNTs, and AuNOh) form monolayers at the interface in the presence of high concentrations of salt. 2D ordered superlattices have been explored by X-ray reflectivity and grazing incidence small angle X-ray scattering. Particularly, for PEG-functionalized AuNRs, the hexagonal columnar phases are created in solution by the interplay of salt and temperature.Using our developed self-assembly strategies, tuning the separation between AuNPs has been investigated by using relatively long polymer chains. Multiple length scales of interparticle distances in the 2D and 3D PEG-AuNP assemblies are achieved by varying grafted PEG chain lengths. Moreover, beyond the 2D hexagonal structure (1 x 1)at the liquid/vapor interface, binary and multi-component system have been studied to create more complex superlattices. √3 x √3 and 2 x 2 binary superlattices are created by co-crystallizing PEG-AuNPs of different Au cores and grafted PEG shell sizes. These multi-stimuli responsive and controllable self-assembly systems discussed here, can be a promising approach to create assemblies of advanced functional nanomaterials for metamaterials.
