Hospitalization for children can cause fear and stress as well as have developmental implications. Child life specialists are present in the hospital setting to support both children and families throughout their hospitalization and minimize these impacts. When the multidisciplinary team, specifically medical students, is unaware of child life it can hinder the amount of pediatric patients that receive child life services. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between educating medical students on child life services and the impact on patient care. Data was collected through the implementation of semi-structured qualitative narratives from three child life specialists. Results indicated that patients and families had more trust in their healthcare team when communication was present throughout their hospitalization. In regards to educating medical students, results suggested that the level of interest students take during child life in-services determines how much knowledge and skills they gain in interacting with pediatric patients. When medical students were attentive during child life education opportunities, there was a positive impact on how students applied child development, coping mechanisms, and age appropriate language during their interactions with patients. This study can be a vantage point for hospitals to begin understanding the benefits of educating its counterparts about child life services and the frequency at which education should be provided for the staff and medical students.
