Today's adolescents are navigating a complex world with unique challenges, and report higher levels of maladaptive functioning as a result. However, previous research posits that mindfulness-based practices are highly effective in cultivating psychological flexibility, resilience, and positive mental health outcomes in adolescents experiencing biopsychosocial dysfunction. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the lived experiences of Canadian adolescents who utilized acceptance and commitment-based practices (ACBPs) such as present-moment awareness, thought-defusion, acceptance/surrender and self-awareness, and to hear about the meaning and impact of personal experiences with psychological flexibility, resilience and positive mental health outcomes. I recruited four Canadian participants, aged 18 to 20, identifying as cisgender females and males, from various ethnic and religious backgrounds. I used Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) to guide semi-structured interviews and the consequent data analysis. The summative themes that emerged across all four participants were: healthy support for mindful development; anchored in identity as boundless; trusting the self to navigate the world; continuous witnessing of the self; desire to be of service; transitioning: grieving a loss of old self, celebrating expansion of mature self; lessons from adversity; cultivating positive relationships through strong boundaries; and acceptance and commitment as dependable resources for navigating adolescence. This thesis contains two manuscripts that detail the research procedures and results, and also implications for counsellors. Manuscript 1 is intended for a scholarly audience, whereas manuscript 2 emphasizes implications for counselling practice.
