This study employed quantitative and qualitative analyses in investigating the effects of social context on the development of critical thinking (CT) dispositions. Social contexts of individuals were examined through their independent and interdependent self-construals. The goals of the study included (a) identifying causal relationships between two types of self-construal and different types of CT dispositions; (b) identifying mechanisms in which two types of self-construal promote or hinder the development of CT dispositions; (c) examining whether there is ethnocentrism embedded in the currently available conceptualizations of CT dispositions; and (d) exploring culturally unique components of CT dispositions perceived by individuals with non-Western cultural backgrounds. A total of 536 college students in Hawaii participated in this study. Items from the California Critical Thinking Disposition Inventory (CCTDI) developed by Facione and his colleagues (Facione & Facione, 1992; Facione, Facione, & Giancarlo, 1996) and those from the Self-Construal Scale (SCS) revised by Leung and Kim (1997) were used for measuring CT dispositions and two types of self-construals, respectively. The originally proposed seven factor structure of the CCTDI by Facione et al. was tested, which yielded a new factor structure with four types of CT dispositions. These newly emerged four factors were cross-validated with the results of Walsh and Hardy (1997), who had previously tested the validity of the inventory. The four CT dispositions were labelled as Intellectual-Diligence, Open-Mindedness, Non-Relativism, and Analyticity. The author's Structural Equation Modeling analysis revealed unique patterns in which the two types of self-construals affected the four CT dispositions. While significant positive effects of independent self-construal on Intellectual-Diligence, Open-Mindedness, and Analyticity were found, interdependent self-construal revealed its significant negative effects on Open-Mindedness and Non-Relativism. Only the effect of interdependent self-construal on Analyticity was significant and positive. The qualitative study with seven survey participants revealed that values such as independence and self-reliance emphasized in home, school, and broader social environments developed their CT dispositions, while their interpersonal values and metaphysical beliefs hindered such development. Furthermore, the data revealed the existence of culturally unique forms of CT dispositions among individuals with non-Western backgrounds and the domain-specific nature of CT dispositions.
