The Pittsburgh Overture (1976) by Krzysztof Penderecki is a significant addition to the literature of the contemporary wind ensemble. Analysis of this piece can provide insight into Penderecki's compositional style and process. Unusual instrumentation and orchestrational techniques are examined as they are applied to the wind ensemble in the creation of textural blocks of sound. Set-class analysis is employed to illuminate Penderecki's free approach to the twelve-tone method in his organization of pitch materials, and a discussion of formal construction emphasizes the importance of the wedge shape on several structural levels. While the Pittsburgh Overture does not exhibit a consistent application of the twelve-tone technique and the formal organization does not conform to any traditional or symmetrical structure, the work is powerful and effective, largely due to Penderecki's intuitive sense of dramatic pacing and gesture.
