Ludus Tonalis, composed 1942, is one of the best piano works by Hindemith. Although it is not treated as mainstream repertoire in today's concert hall due to its tremendous complexity and length, Ludus Tonalis contains very attractive and fluid contrapuntal writing. The purpose of this thesis is to help promote a clear understanding of the piece through analysis and performance suggestions, in the hopes that it will soon take its rightful position in the piano repertoire of the 20th century. The thesis is outlined in the following four sections. First, a general biographical background of Hindemith and the classification of his works are described. Second, since Ludus Tonalis is closely related to Hindemith's Series 1 and 2 theories, these theories are explained in accordance with his book, Craft of Musical Composition. The organization of key structure in Ludus Tonalis is based on the theory of Series 1. Third, the main body of this thesis gives a chronology of the composition of Ludus Tonalis, its general structure (12 Fugues, 11 Interludes, Praeludium, and Postludium), analysis of each piece, and description of style and identifying characteristics where needed. Also, considerable portion of this section are devoted to explaining the relationship between Praeludium and Postludium, which are linked in retrograde inversion. This technique and relation keeps the entire cycle held cohesively together. Fourth, the cycle's reputation and problematic points are discussed from a performer's point of view. In this section tempi and usage of pedal are dealt with. Hindemith provided specific metronome indications which are discussed in relation to the editor's (Gunter Ludwig's) suggestion for both slower and faster tempi. Proper usage of pedal, especially in contrapuntal writing, is recommended for certain passages.
