Researchers are actively addressing the challenge of heat transfer in building exterior wall components to reduce energy consumption and CO2 emissions in the construction industry. The International Energy Agency highlights the significance of the building "envelope" - the outermost layer of construction that faces the exterior of the building - in energy usage, with walls, openings, roofs, and floors playing crucial roles in managing heat transfer. Surface roughness and texture of the building facade influence heat transfer, particularly in areas exposed to solar radiation.Digital fabrication technologies, mainly 3-axis CNC routers, have recently become widely used in the building industry to create surface textures, aiming to mitigate heat gain. However, digital design and fabrication aspects lack comprehensive documentation or understanding from a sustainability perspective. This dissertation aims to fill this gap by testing the impact of 3-axis CNC routing on architectural surface textures to mitigate and enhance heat gain on building surfaces and develop a predictive framework that includes a preliminary set of digital tooling and climate-relevant performance data.The research explores the role of 3-axis CNC cutting tools, tool paths, cut depth, and the angle of the cut in generating diverse surface textures on 10" x 10" (12.7x12.7cm2 ) concrete cladding tiles and evaluates their thermal performance over annual weather cycles for a specific climate. The evaluation followed a simulation and experimental method to test five different textures (A, B, C, D, and E) created by two distinct CNC tools (ball and vee bits), two tool paths (plunge roughing and parallel finish), various tool stepovers, and 0˚, 45˚, 90˚, and 135˚ angles of the cut. The simulation methodology evaluates the amount of radiation received by each tile and its self-shading properties, while the experimental phase measures surface temperatures and heat transfer rates across the textured tiles. The results underscore the significance of careful CNC parameter selection in texture creation. Vee and ball bits were identified as capable of increasing tile surface area, self-shading properties, and solar radiation received by the tile. Furthermore, during warm months, Tiles B, D, and A demonstrated an opportunity to mitigate heat transfer across the southern facade by 14.2%, 5.1%, and 3.4%, respectively, compared to the flat tile. Additionally, implementing these tiles resulted in a reduction of exterior surface temperature by 6.9°F.
