In this work, a historical context of fatness is presented to provide a framework for understanding current attitudes, biases, and perceptions of fat individuals. Further, particular emphasis is placed on the ways in which fat women are subject to unique kinds of stigmatization and ostracization due to a complex interplay of fatness and womanhood, and these findings are extrapolated to fat adolescent girls. To fully understand the complexity of the subjective experiences of fat adolescent girls, this author integrates Fredrickson and Roberts's (1997) Objectification Theory and Keery et al.'s (2004) Tripartite Influence Model to develop a comprehensive understanding of the development of body image dissatisfaction and disordered eating patterns in fat adolescent girls. In integrating these two models, the subjective experiences and psychological functioning of fat adolescents can be more accurately conceptualized and can be recognized as different than the experiences of their thin female peers. Further, this work utilizes a relational psychoanalytic framework to develop interventions and techniques for clinicians to employ in a clinical context with fat adolescent girls presenting with body image concerns and disordered eating patterns. Relational psychoanalytic conceptualization and technique speak to the significance placed on the sociocultural context in both Objectification Theory (Fredrickson & Roberts, 1997) and the Tripartite Influence Model (Keery et al., 2004). Specifically, relational psychoanalysis conceptualizes relational patterns and interpersonal relationships as stemming from a broader sociocultural context, which subsequently influence the development of an individual's sense of self and overall symptom presentation. In addition to relational psychoanalytic techniques, this work also delineates ways in which a clinician can share meaningful psychoeducation about pervasive sociocultural influences, utilize tenets of both body positivity and body neutrality movements, and become curious about oppressive and discriminatory structures in everyday life with fat adolescent girls.
