More than 50% of healthcare clinicians in the US experience burnout symptoms, which can be influenced by physical, social, and psychological factors present in their work environment (Melynk, 2019). Burnout has a negative impact on patient care and outcomes, yet research has primarily focused on its underlying causes rather than its consequences for patients. In the healthcare delivery system, the long-term care sector lacks research related to nurse burnout and there is a significant gap in objective data analysis of patient outcomes with nurse burnout. This study aimed to explore the correlations between nurse burnout in long-term care and patient fall rates. The Maslach Burnout Inventory for Healthcare and Human Services (Medical Professionals) (MBI-HSS MP) was used to assess burnout levels of Registered Nurse and Licensed Practical Nurse staff in three long-term care facilities in Southeastern Wisconsin. These levels were then correlated with patient fall rates from October and November 2023. Although the study results did not align with the researchers' initial hypothesis, they suggest that there are additional mediating factors in the nurses' work-life environment and demographics that affect burnout levels. The findings offer insight and implications for future research on burnout, its theories, and its application to healthcare organizations.
