Obesity, defined as a Body Mass Index (BMI) of equal or greater than 30 kg/m2, is an epidemic in the US. This epidemic is also a leading risk factor for developing lower-extremity osteoarthritis. (Ricciardi et al., 2019). According to the Centers for Disease Control [CDC] (2022), the prevalence of obesity in the U.S. is 41.9% for adults aged greater than or equal to 18 years old. A Midwestern healthcare organization's orthopedic service adopted a preoperative weight requirement of BMI of less than 40kg/m2 before elective joint replacement to mitigate the substantial surgical risk associated with greater BMI, such as prosthetic joint infection and failure (Boyce et al., 2019). As a result, obesity medicinal clinics have a long wait list of over ten months between referrals and appointments. This Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project aimed to improve wait list times. The method utilized a Shared Medical Appointments (SMA) approach. The Intervention sought to form a group of 10-15 participants experiencing long wait times to meet bi-weekly and utilized the existing clinic staff to deliver the SMA care for this project. The Results aimed to reduce referral wait times, improve staff efficiency, and lower participants' BMI. The Conclusion reinforced the need for SMA in this practice.
