Attitude Determination and Control Systems (ADCS) testbeds are an important platform for the demonstration of satellite control systems prior to a satellite launch and on-orbit operations. These Earthbound testbeds may utilize an altered and controllable magnetic field, a Sun simulator, imitation star fields, air bearings, balancing weights, vacuum and temperature chambers and other mechanisms to best replicate the environment of space here on the ground. Satellites will use an array of sensors and actuators to detect and interact with their environment, their location and orientation in that environment. A CubeSat is a nanosatellite standard developed to be more affordable, more approachable, more modular, have a low barrier to entrance and have a faster turn around time alternative to traditional satellites. Many of which may weigh several tons and cost millions of dollars to test and put in space. As such, many institutions seek to use the small 10 cm, 1.3 kg modular cube standard to demonstrate their equipment or control algorithms and investigate new theories in the lab rather than in space. Thus providing great savings in time and money and allowing for greater flexibility for those wishing to test or to train students. This testbed will demonstrate effective control of a CubeSat through the use of Helmholtz coils, magnetic torquer solenoids, reaction wheels and inexpensive student-made components and available components off the shelf (COTS) in the San Diego State University SPACE Lab.
