Social workers provide services to a variety of populations in many different settings and are likely to work with individuals who have experienced traumatic events. Due to their chronic exploration of their clients' stories of trauma, social workers are at risk for developing the symptoms of secondary trauma, which can have negative consequences both professionally and personally. The risk of exposure to secondary trauma makes it imperative that social workers receive education and training on how to identify, prevent, and cope with its associated symptoms. This research study aims to gain an understanding of how social workers cope with their exposure to secondary trauma and what training has been helpful in doing so. The following overarching research questions were: (a) How do social workers describe the ways they cope with their exposure to secondary trauma? and (b) How do social workers describe training that has been helpful? This case used a qualitative and action research design and drew foundationally from resiliency theory. Study participants were both BSW and MSW-level social workers currently working in direct care practice in a variety of settings and with a variety of populations. Data were collected in three ways: individual interviews, focus groups, and a field journal. The data were transcribed and analyzed using thematic analysis, and patterns were developed into themes that helped to answer the research questions. Symptomology, coping, and lack of training emerged as the most prominent themes. The study findings showed that many social workers are experiencing the symptoms of secondary trauma but are not receiving the necessary education and training on how to identify, prevent, and cope with it. This study contributes to the literature on secondary trauma by increasing the understanding of social workers in current practice.
