Since interiors are only 7% of the overall embodied CO₂ emissions for a newly constructed building they have been overlooked in the push to decarbonize the built environment. There is growing evidence that multiple interior build-outs over the life of a building can account for larger carbon emissions than the entire core and shell building accounted for in original construction. This research examines data from a survey of facility professionals to investigate what kind of knowledge, motivation, and organizational influences might factor into the adoption of zero carbon interior build-outs. Results show that while the respondents have a high level of personal knowledge and personal motivation regarding zero carbon interiors, their organizations have a low number of net zero interior build-outs completed or pursued. The research suggests a connection between low organizational knowledge of net zero carbon interior build-outs and low organizational motivation to pursue such projects. Organizational motivation is also shown to be affected by financial benefits, as well as the lack of decision-making authority by the respondents. Solutions to fill these organizational gaps could be professional development presentations, as well as providing more decision-making authority to facilities professionals. Additional research is recommended to ascertain what kind of financial benefits would motivate organizations to pursue zero carbon interiors.
