Background. We wrote our SR with a goal to compare the efficacy of treatment methods addressing Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) among the postmenopausal population to improve balance impairments they may experience secondary to vertigo symptoms. We investigated a type of vestibular rehabilitation therapy, called gaze stabilization, and explored its effectiveness when used in conjunction with Epley maneuver (EM) compared to merely using EM alone. With our CAT, we had a desire to investigate another common condition experienced by the postmenopausal population: stress urinary incontinence (SUI). We wanted to explore if electromyographic biofeedback assisted pelvic floor muscle training was effective in treating SUI. Methods. Four independent researchers conducted a systematic search for research articles published between January and March 2023 utilizing five databases based on selected inclusion and exclusion criteria. We included articles written about humans age 65 years and older in the English language. We excluded articles about children, animals, Meneire's Disease, or central vertigo. Using the same five databases, we conducted a search for relevant articles regarding our CAT. Our inclusion criteria were identical to those of the SR, and we excluded articles regarding animals and children. The full-text articles we found were screened using the Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro) and the National Institutes of Health-National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NIH-NHLBI) assessment questionnaires. The raters independently appraised the articles to reduce risk of bias. The SR focused on outcome measures such as static and dynamic balance through end sway velocity and dizziness symptoms, whereas the CAT focused on incontinence episode frequency and quality of life. Results. For the SR, 13 articles were evaluated, and three were reviewed for the CAT. It was determined in the SR that, although the combination of EM and gaze stabilization exercises significantly improves balance in postmenopausal women, more research is needed to prove that it is more effective than EM alone. In the CAT, no significant data were found indicating that pelvic floor therapy (PFT) was more effective in reducing SUI when combined with electromyographic biofeedback than just PFT alone. Conclusions. In both the SR and the CAT, there was a lack of research regarding the postmenopausal population specifically. Articles found for the SR were mostly lower quality evidence, while all articles for the CAT were higher quality. The researchers found that most of the SR articles focused on treatments like EM and gaze stabilization but had little focus on the postmenopausal population, while the articles for the CAT exclusively included postmenopausal women. Future research would be beneficial with refined population samples.
