This dissertation, "Structures of Repetition: the Feminine Mediation of Digital Culture" examines how quotidian processes are gendered and themselves mediate digital culture from the 1960s to the present. Following scholars of feminist media studies and Science, Technology, and Society Studies, this dissertation's goal is to locate and describe the iterations of gender that are further removed from the literal, and legibly gendered, yet are still embedded parts of daily life. Attending to the seemingly meaningless actions at work within media therefore allows this dissertation to join feminist media scholars in describing the reality that gender matters in ways beyond the explicit nature of representations. Through my analysis, I locate the workings of feminine gendered actions, in particular, which are instances of repetition across digital and print objects. Because repetition is the recurrence of something already perceived, its appearance in digital cultures often disappears as a passive, non-agential, even lazy movement. In other words, repetitive recurrences across media are easily and even intentionally ignored and subjugated because they are themselves excessively easy, generic, small, and common in the contemporary. These very traits mark repetition as a gendered process: as easy labor and passive engagement. This dissertation moves from digital media to print media to offer its case studies. Each chapter foregrounds a specific mode of repetition: rewatching, copy/pasting, mimicking, subtracting, and echoing as actions that register below the metrics of agency. In other words, these repetitions are so small and separated from the media's engines of power as to appear automated and passive. Each chapter makes a case for reframing these modes of repetition as modes of power: I argue that it is the very weakness of their affects and the smallness of their changes that enables their endurance. Through these examples, I reveal the ways in which interpreting forms of repetition as gendered mediation presents new ways of understanding them as instances of strategic agency. This dissertation's approach to the feminine as a process of repetition offers its primary intervention in feminist media studies. This capitulation of process can be otherwise understood as a mode of mediation, that is, as a mode by which the substance and structure of media are articulated. Across this dissertation, I perceive femininity processually in way that might be as extracted or suppressed by dominant or implicit structures. At other times, the feminine is the mediatory process that presents weakness and apparent thoughtlessness as the very thing allowing subjectivities to exist; to endure. That the feminine manifests in such ambiguous or ambivalent instances becomes the crux of my interpretative method. Each chapter understands mediation as a thing happening within a particular technological world that enables or disables certain modes of existence. I present an understanding of that particular world via a constant back and forth between designating the represented feminine and then determining the feminine as a process in the act of becoming. Across these chapters, I therefore perceive the feminine as it emerges as in dialogue with the formal constraints of each object-whether that constraint is a procedural mechanic, affective genre, or literary style.
