Learning a foreign language in adulthood is a daunting task for many. This struggle has spurred a massive market for language learning technologies like Duolingo and Memrise. These services, which use gameplay to tackle the many reasons why acquiring language in adulthood is hard, like lack of time to practice or no one to practice with. For adults to reach fluency, they need regular and consistent practice with their language of choice and opportunities to speak, listen, and read - areas in which the available technology currently lacks. There is an opportunity to fill these learning gaps and create a more engaging, custom experience with emerging generative AI technologies, however, more information is needed around the effectiveness and viability of using AI technology for this purpose. This research and subsequent design project explores the current landscape of AI-based language learning technologies, establishes their effectiveness, and proposes a new game concept that addresses the needs of users in a way that traditional app technologies and newer AI-based technologies are not: an AI-based, choose-your-own-adventure, language learning game.
