The increasing use of AI for communication analyzation raises ethical concerns and questions about its trustworthiness. While human-like features and emotional intelligence in AI could build trust, it might also lead to an overreliance on machines due to a perceived "Machine Heuristic" of trustworthiness. This study explored AI credibility in deception. One-hundred ninety-nine participants judged the truthfulness of transcripts analyzed by AI, but where participants were randomly assigned to believing they were analyzed by either FBI agents, or students. The results showed that there were no differences in perceived trust between the analyzers. However, participants were better at detecting lies, especially when the analysis was labeled AI or FBI. The analyzer type (AI vs. human) also influenced accuracy, such that men overall judged statements as more trustworthy. These findings highlight the complexities of AI credibility and its impact on decision-making. As AI becomes more prominent, understanding its influence on human behavior, particularly judgment and social interactions, is crucial.
