Thesis (D.M.)--Colorado Technical University, 2017.
The management of information technology (IT) related projects is a common phenomenon that has occurred globally since the introduction of IT into business operations. Although the introduction of IT into business operations has resulted in improved efficiency and easy access to information for strategic decision making, the use of the appropriate techniques for managing IT projects successfully remains a challenge. This qualitative study explored the methods, tools, skills, and procedures used to manage IT related projects in Ghana using three companies in the public utility sector for the study. The purpose of the research was to understand the challenges associated with managing IT projects regarding stakeholder, technology, and project management support. The purposeful sampling procedure was used to select 12 people including nine males and three females involved in IT project implementation to answer the interview questions. The selection criteria were based on their project management experience, education, certification, and IT management experience. Semi-structured face-to-face interviews and document analysis were utilized to gather data. Six major themes and 11 key points emerged from the study suggesting the need for the establishment of a project management office (PMO), IT governance, change management procedures, training in project management, and use of automated tools and templates to improve project reporting and documentation. This study is significant in that it provides information about the appropriate techniques for managing IT projects within the utility industry in Ghana while taking into consideration those factors particular to the project environment that exists within the country.
