In many applications, we need to solve a problem of minimizing a Rayleigh quotient with linear constraints. In this thesis we first show how to eliminate the linear constraints by orthogonal projection, and then reformulate it as a quadratic eigenvalue problem. We show how the quadratic eigenvalue problem can be reduced by the Lanczos algorithm and then solved by linearization. Numerical examples are given to show the efficiency of the proposed approach.
