The financial struggle leaders and healthcare providers of critical access hospitals face, limits the healthcare services and the availability of hospitals in rural communities. The struggle emerges from low resources and trying to meet federal regulations and requirements. Some leaders have closed their hospital's doors and some have integrated with health systems. Other leaders have kept their hospitals independent and are serving the public although are struggling financially and are looking for viable options. Collaboration has been a success for some organizations because staff can share resources they encounter fewer expenses, and can provide needed services. Collaboration among critical access hospitals could potentially help decrease inpatient hospital costs. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore, from the perspective of hospital staff and medical professionals, different opportunities and difficulties as they collaborate with other healthcare providers and use an electronic health record system to share patient information and coordinate patient care. A secondary purpose was to evaluate whether collaborative actions contribute to a decrease in inpatient hospital costs. The instruments used were a survey, with 15 participants, and public sources such as news articles available on the Internet. The data collected were reviewed to identify themes. Inductive thematic analysis was used. The findings regarding collaboration and patient care coordination while using the electronic health record system were positive because there are more opportunities for improving patient health and decreasing costs. These are consistent with existing literature and research. A possible solution for the financial problems of critical access hospitals is the application of the collaboration theory. This study may contribute to the general theory of collaboration in healthcare.
