This qualitative exploratory case study explored business and technical leaders' motivations, intentions, and knowledge required to integrate health information systems to lower the cost of health care. The nature of leadership is critical in improving the delivery of health care. Health care providers and payers need to understand the factors of leadership in supporting an integrated health information system and its potential benefits and risks. Research data was collected through 11 open-ended face-to-face interview questions conducted within a quiet and private location. Two research questions guided the study: (1) "What are the technical business leaders' knowledge, motivations, and intentions regarding integrating health information systems to lower the cost of health care?" and (2) "What do technical business leaders perceive as successful strategies required for creating an integrated health information system for the purpose of reducing health care costs?" Data Analysis revealed several themes per guided interview question and revealed six overarching themes that leaders within the IDS perceived as strategies basic to any integration strategy: (a) Policies and Governance, (b) Knowledgeable Resources, (c) Communication, (d) Cost Drivers, (e) Ease of Use (f) MDM and Standardization, (g) Partnership, and (h) Customizability. Recommendations for practice includes a formal knowledge educational assessment program geared toward level-setting (to ensure that everyone is at the same level of understanding) and dissemination process that would help to determine the knowledge level needs of the key resources. Recommendations for future studies include a focus on leadership styles that may influence the success and failure of technology integration within IDS.
