The purpose of this research was to assess the accuracy of resources utilized by Information Technology departments that assist with preventing cyber threats in higher education, in order to mitigate future threats from occurring. It was important to focus on data breaches in higher education since the personal identifiable information of students, staff, and faculty is obtainable and utilized by hackers. Students and alumni place trust in higher education institutions when providing their information, so bridging the gap in possible data breaches is important. This research showed the current data breaches occurring at higher education institutions and the outcome of each data breach. Research shows the different methods in use by multiple universities and colleges that work to improve and bridge the gaps in data breaches before and after they occur.
