Often, within the criminal justice system, various mitigating factors are taken into account during the many phases of prosecution. Gender and gender role beliefs are among those many factors. Often these factors are consciously---and at times subconsciously---utilized in an individual's perception of how they view certain crimes and criminals. The label female sex offender can evoke a multitude of complex and mixed feelings and thoughts. The purpose of this study is to examine the attitudes of the general public regarding typologies of female sex offenders. Furthermore, it examines the relationship between gender, gender-role beliefs, attitudes toward female sex offenders, and recommended severity of sentencing for female sex offenders by the 93 people who participated in this study.

520 $a The materials used for this study includes a demographic form, followed by four surveys: (1) Attitudes Toward Female Sex Offenders (ATFSO) Questionnaire, (2) Gender Role Beliefs Scale-Short Form, (3) Prevalence of Female Sex Offender Typologies, and (4) a Lenience Vignette Questionnaire. The data collected does not support the idea that there is a correlation between attitudes toward female sex offenders and gender role beliefs and the level of severity of sentences assigned to the different typologies of female sex offenders. This study further explored whether male and female participants differed in the level of severity of sentencing assigned to the different typologies of female sex offenders, which was supported by this study.
520 $a The aim and importance of this research is to be a useful tool for policymakers when constructing laws, sanctions, and the general safety for the public. It will also raise awareness of the actual, versus the perceived, relation of female sex offenders, genders, gender role-beliefs, and the leniency of sentencing.
