Residential treatment serving children and adolescents can be a crucial component of broader, coordinated systems of care, which aim to strengthen families and aid in the transition of children back into the community. External pressure from managed care companies to provide the highest quality of care at the lowest cost possible has made program evaluation and client satisfaction research imperative for their survival. This qualitative program study explored the perceptions and opinions of children and adolescents who reside at The Christie School (CS), a residential treatment center in Marylhurst, Oregon, by utilizing a unique solution-focused interview approach. Interviews focused on the children's positive personal experiences at the agency as a way of exploring what they perceive to be the program's strengths and asked for their feedback in bettering the agency to meet their needs. The sample consisted of 11 children aged 12 to 17 years who currently resided at CS. Data was analyzed utilizing an inductive approach, namely thematic content analysis. The findings indicate that participants believe that what "works" are: (a) Staff who have a sense of humor, are direct and firm, supportive, good listeners, warm, helping and "cool"; (b) an environment which promotes positive peer interaction, support and collaboration; (c) a structured environment with rules and boundaries; (d) an environment that allows for freedom, flexibility, and residents' opinions about their treatment; (e) a place that creates opportunities for residents to feel "normal" and more a part of the community and (f) incentives. These findings were summarized and presented to the agency in a pamphlet so that the agency may utilize the results in their program. This study puts forth factors that may contribute to treatment effectiveness in residential treatment for children and adolescents. Further research of this kind is critical in gaining a better understanding of the child resident's experience of residential treatment and their perspective on what works. As milieu staff significantly influence the experiences of children in residential treatment, it is recommended that future research include solution-focused interviews with milieu staff.
