This clinical dissertation focuses on the topic of biopsychosocial risk factors and outcomes of acute injuries in soccer. The topic is important because of the high injury rate in the sport, the rising number of participants including women and children, and the numerous negative outcomes of injuries. The biopsychosocial risk factors of acute soccer injuries is a major clinical issue, however there is a significant gap between research and practice. Namely, regulatory organizations of the sport have failed to integrate empirically supported biopsychosocially-based strategies to best manage acute soccer injuries to ensure player safety. This doctoral thesis critically reviews the research literature on this topic and examines strategies implemented by regulatory organizations of soccer. It also includes a summary of findings to support recommendations to soccer organizations to aid them in ensuring player safety. The project also integrates recommendations from clinical professions who have experience with the athletic environment and clinical interventions. The information from the literature review and input from professionals were integrated into the creation of a journal manuscript to enhance knowledge and awareness of this issue to relevant stakeholders. A draft of the manuscript created with the input of field consultants is included. See appendix E for a draft of the manuscript to be supported to the Journal of Sport Sciences. Additionally, suggestions are offered for reducing the gap between research and clinical practice pertaining to acute sport injuries and the safety of soccer athletes as well as the discussion of the study's limitations and implications.
