The purpose of this capstone project was to perform in-depth research of how ransomware affects businesses, with an emphasis on healthcare as a business. Ransomware has evolved since first being discovered and the tactics and end goals vary per variant of the malware. This research identified the growing risk of ransomware to the healthcare industry and the potential catastrophic effects that it can have. This Capstone identified various methods of infiltration; examples of healthcare centers and businesses being affected by ransomware; how businesses can prevent attacks; how to mitigate a ransomware attack; and finally, what steps businesses can take once they are infected with ransomware.

The importance of this research is highlighted by the growing epidemic that is ransomware. It can be used as a valuable reference tool for business owners and executives alike; as well as a reference for IT departments trying to keep current with ransomware trends. Recommendations for future research were made including continued education and awareness for employees, strict policy enforcement, and the development of business continuity plans for businesses. These were made in an attempt to educate the target audience in the prevention of ransomware. Lastly, the research concluded that more must be done to prevent and mitigate ransomware attacks.
