Advances in information and communication technology acting as crucial enablers, groups of people come together around a project-oriented site that supports remote interaction, discussion, and the production of a shared work product. As this style of highly decentralized collaboration become increasingly influential and popular, merely describing successful cases has become less useful. We need to understand what makes such collaboration effective at a structural level and which social processes are associated with better outcomes.

Thus, this research explores the social processes and structures that impact productivity of online collaboration communities. Toward that end, this dissertation combines theoretical approaches in organization science with in- depth empirical analysis of one of the biggest online communities, Wikipedia. The first study focuses on the temporal relationship between editing actions on Wikipedia articles and user communication on talk pages, and shows that article and contributor characteristics affect this relationship. The second study focuses on the textual characteristics of user communication, identifying both the style and content characteristics that drive productivity. The final study takes a network approach and focuses on the effects of sub-group formation on productivity.
