This study takes a retrospective look into finding out what motivations lead to continued participation in collegiate sport after high school or the discontinued participation after high school athletics. The Sport Motivation Scale (SMS-28) was used to find the difference in athletes and non-athletes, along with males and females in their motivation to participate in athletics.

Motivation is defined as influences that initiate, direct, and sustain human behavior (Iso-Ahola, 1999). A theory suggests that a person is more motivated to participate in an activity when one or more of the psychological needs are met (Lox, Martin-Ginis, & Petruzzello, 2006). Descriptive statistics will be used along with two independent t-test when analyzing the data collected from the participants in the research. This research will allow for male and female student's motivations to continue or discontinue athletic involvement to be more transparent for the sport management and athletic industry.
