This proposal focuses on the pattern of food deserts related to public housing, because the pattern is associated with socio-cultural factors. Neighborhoods within dense urban landscapes possess a concentration of poverty and racial enclaves. These two grouping factors produce a lack of food resource options within the neighborhood producing food desert communities.

This study aims at alleviating food inequality and in-access through the exploration of Green Infrastructure (GI) practices as a means of mitigation. By choosing a public housing complex as an archetype of the conditions surrounding a food desert as a small scale study area quantifiable results can be formulated. To test my hypothesis and possibly implement a Green Infrastructure practice, I have selected Binghamton, New York as my study area. This region is an urban environment with a concentrated minority population and below poverty level persons.

Green Infrastructure provides numerous perceived socioeconomic benefits to the community. Providing a different application of GI than its typical application in commercial enterprises and suburban communities, test the possibility of a role for GI in reducing food deserts areas. The results may be applicable to other areas as well. This project intends to promote one dimension of sustainable communities through GI implementation that can mitigate food issues, while creating greener communities.
