Participatory Design (PD) includes a set of maturing and evolving practices in computer-based design; it encourages designers to involve prospective users as co- designers, so that users can contribute their knowledge and experience as information sources for designer's ideas. Computer Assisted Learning (CAL) tools are becoming evermore popular and personalized. Active Video Game (AVG) is a kind of game played on a video game system, which requires users to interact with a screen avatar by moving their bodies. In this project, I invited and worked with three Tai Chi expert teachers to design a Tai Chi CAL System (System) using Microsoft's Xbox 360 Kinect V2 technology. The experts' extensive experience in teaching Tai Chi and their knowledge of the discipline, as well as their familiarity with the problems frequently experienced by beginners provided valuable insights throughout the design process. In addition, the experts served to evaluate the usefulness of the learning system as a teaching aid. Through applying the theories of PD, CAL and AVG in designing this System, I demonstrate a mastery of PD theories, best practices in the use of CAL tools and competence in digital media skills needed to undertake such an enterprise.
