The Chinese furniture tradition is the longest in the world. Adopting the constructions and joinery of wooden architecture, by the Ming dynasty it had developed into an art form unique in its combination of functional and aesthetic beauty. In this thesis a group of Ming dynasty pieces of domestic hardwood furniture in Kansas City is dated and placed in the contexts of their setting, craft, and historical development. First a detailed study was made of the joinery of each example. Then it was dated on the basis of comparisons with dated pieces, models found in datable tombs, book illustrations, datable paintings, and other decorative arts. This forms the catalogue and is the backbone of the study.

The paper begins with a discussion of the Ming house and interior, using as especially important evidence the merchants' houses in Anhwei province and some colored paintings illustrating episodes from Chin P'ing-mei. The following chapter on craftsmen, materials, and joinery is based largely upon textual sources. Chapter III places Ming dynasty furniture in a larger historical context by briefly discussing the development of various types. One type, the canopied bed, is treated in more detail as an example of how the changes in form, design, and use can be traced historically by using both written and visual documentations. Chapter IV deals with the problems and sources for dating. It concludes with an account of chronological development within the Ming dynasty, based upon the dating of the Kansas City pieces.

Historically various fashions may be seen in the evolution of Chinese furniture. The T'ang dynasty pieces are elaborate in their decoration and use of materials. The Sung dynasty is distinguished by flat surfaces and delicate, intricately carved silhouettes. In the Ming dynasty the ornament adhers to the structure and is an integral part of it. Simple, bold, perfectly proportioned shapes are fully three-dimensional sculpted forms. During the Ch'ing period the tradition begins to decline. The structure loses its vigor and fussy decoration seems applied to the surface rather than an essential part of the piece.
