520 $a The Introduction establishes the thesis that provincial intellectuals provided the middle group between the Confucian elites and the illiterate peasants in late imperial China. An understanding of the sub-elite culture the provincial intellectuals represented therefore shows the adhesive and communitive function of this group.
520 $a Chapter I gives an account of T'ang Chen's life as an unsuccessful immigrant to Wu-chiang district in Kiangnan area.
520 $a Chapter II introduces T'ang's political thought which is highly critical of both inefficient local administrations and the inhumane rules of his time.
