The dissertation is a study of the 17th century Chinese provincial intellectual, T'ang Chen (1630-1704).

The Introduction establishes the thesis that provincial intellectuals provided the middle group between the Confucian elites and the illiterate peasants in late imperial China. An understanding of the sub-elite culture the provincial intellectuals represented therefore shows the adhesive and communitive function of this group.

Chapter I gives an account of T'ang Chen's life as an unsuccessful immigrant to Wu-chiang district in Kiangnan area.

Chapter II introduces T'ang's political thought which is highly critical of both inefficient local administrations and the inhumane rules of his time.

Chapter III gives an analysis of T'ang's social critique which emphasized the reciprocal nature of marital relations and mutual-aid among relatives and friends.

Chapter IV is an attempt to explain the inner world of T'ang Chen as an isolated provincial scholar. It also presents T'ang's own reflections on the Confucian tradition as well as contemporary intellectual activity.
