Using Korman's (1977) self-consistency theory, this study examined the relationship between self-esteem and job satisfaction of neonatal and infant intensive care nurses. The sample consisted of 35 registered nurses who completed job satisfaction, need satisfaction, and self-esteem tools. The findings indicate a stronger positive relationship between need satisfaction and job satisfaction for high self-esteem employees than for low self-esteem employees, a stronger positive relationship between two of the three social references and job satisfaction for low self-esteem employees than for high self-esteem employees, and that self-esteem is positively related to job satisfaction.
