Recently, there has been renewed interest in research regarding political socialization with particular emphasis being placed upon the high school years. Adult political attitudes and orientations are routinely surveyed yet questions remain on how we develop political awareness and understanding prior to adulthood. Also, there have been new changes in federal rules that allow for school districts to create single-sex schools. Educational research on this topic is ongoing and the findings are mixed. For example, various studies suggest that single-sex education can provide some benefits to some students in particular settings. Using original survey data of 1563 high school juniors and seniors in co-educational public schools and co-educational and single-sex religious schools, this study seeks to fill in some of the gaps in what we know about late adolescent's political orientations, if a gender gap exists, and whether a single-sex school environment has a positive effect on those orientations.

520 $a Indeed most interesting to note, is that I find evidence that a gender gap exists between boys and girls in levels of internal efficacy, political knowledge and political discussions. In these data boys are more politically efficacious, politically knowledgeable and engage more frequently in political discussions than girls. Conversely, I find a gender gap exists between girls and boys in group membership with girls belonging to significantly more political groups than boys. Additionally, I find students attending a co-educational school have higher levels of external efficacy and fare better on political knowledge questions than those attending a single sex school. These findings are particularly important for two reasons. First, the gender gap which exists in adult males and females also exists in adolescents. Discussion of the gender gap is often controversial and yet my findings indicate that it may be real. Second, single-sex school environments do not have positive effects on adolescent political attitudes and orientations contrary to educational research and findings of positive associations with other academic outcomes. This raises the question of what the long term effects will be of single sex schooling on political constructs for both genders in the future.
