The purpose of the current study was to explore effectiveness of a language development program using communication apps (such as, GoTalk, Touch Chat, and Speak for Yourself) for school aged children with developmental disabilities. The current study included 15 school aged children. The participants consisted of seven verbal boys, one verbal girl, and seven non-verbal boys with ages ranging from 5 to 9 years old at Manhattan Star Academy. Each child was administered the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test-IV (PPVT) for receptive language and understanding. There was no significant change from pretest to posttest for either group; however, there was a significant difference between the Verbal and the Non Verbal groups (F (1, 13) =5.24, p = .04) at the post test. The results indicated that the Verbal group increased their PPVT score from 56.50 to 63.26, while the Non Verbal group actually decreased their scores from 26.57 to 25.43.
