Among women from Western cultures, dissatisfaction with one's body is so prevalent and pervasive that some researchers have described it as "normative discontent." Moreover, body dissatisfaction has shown to be a consistent risk factor in the development of eating disorders. Research has shown that late adolescent and young adult---so called "traditional college-age" women are particularly prone to experiencing body dissatisfaction. Additionally, college represents a unique environment given that women are constantly surrounded by peers of their own age. As such, the current study utilized a qualitative approach that focused on the role of peer influences on body dissatisfaction in college women. Twelve college females, ranging in age from 18--22 years old, participated in semi-structured interviews that explored the impact of both friendships and the social environment of college on body dissatisfaction. Results suggested that college women who are dissatisfied with their bodies frequently engage in appearance-focused comparisons with others and are more likely to make these comparisons with strangers than they are with acquaintances or close friends. Five major themes were identified and discussed in the context of the current literature. Clinical implications and directions for future research are also reviewed.
