I explore the results of three thinning treatments applied to a 25-year old bottomland hardwood plantation in Russell Sage Wildlife Management Area (RSWMA) with regard to understory species richness, pollinator species richness, pollinator species assemblage, and invertebrate family richness and assemblage. Results indicate that all three treatments greatly improve habitat conditions over the original un-thinned plantation. Analysis of understory species richness at smaller scales shows support for the intermediate disturbance hypothesis (IDH) when considering tree removal as a disturbance. Interestingly, analysis of pollinators and other invertebrates also shows that each treatment resulted in different assemblages of the study organisms. This suggests that the treatments do result in different conditions and attract different species. This study concludes by setting the foundations for future research in bottomland hardwood plantations.
