When a child misbehaves, many parents want to obtain immediate obedience from the child. Research indicates that parents focused on long-term, child-centered goals, such as teaching children social standards, are better able to implement techniques such as planned ignoring or time-out than parents with short-term or parent-centered goals, and can also stay calmer when handling misbehavior. I used brief, document-based psychoeducation to change parents" discipline goals, discipline behaviors, and emotional responses to misbehavior. Seventy-one community sample parents of young children reported their discipline goals, behaviors, and negative affect from a recent misbehavior situation with their child. Parents were then randomly assigned to an experimental condition, where they were provided with a short psychoeducational document on the importance of long-term child-centered goals, or a control condition. All parents then reported their discipline goals, behaviors, and negative affect during two misbehavior situations over three weeks. Results revealed that parents in the experimental condition were significantly more likely to focus on long-term discipline goals than parents in the control condition in both public and private misbehavior situations. Additionally, in the experimental condition, parents who read the psychoeducation up to once per day were likely to use low-power assertive discipline techniques and report low levels of negative affect during public misbehavior situations. These results highlight a dosage effect of psychoeducation; parents who read the psychoeducation once per day for about three minutes per day were most likely to report long-term goals, low-power assertive discipline techniques, and low levels of negative affect during the misbehavior situations. This is the first study to demonstrate that brief, document-based psychoeducation about long-term discipline goals can not only improve parents' discipline goals, but also improve their discipline behaviors and emotional reactions to misbehaviors in real-world situations. Psychoeducation is an extremely low-cost, easily distributed, and easily implemented tool to improve how parents in the community discipline young children.
