Thesis (M.M.Ed.)--Azusa Pacific University, 2018.
Includes bibliographical references
The purpose of this thesis project is to summarize previous studies on music practice with the intention of providing suggestions to improve music practice amongst music students, their parents and music teachers in China where music education is growing considerably. Three questions guided this project: (a) how do music learners practice efficiently; (b) how can teachers guide students into more efficient and effective practice; and (c) how can parents support their children to achieve more efficient practice. This study organized previous research into three areas: the nature of practice, practice strategies, and attitudes toward practice.

Based on the previous studies, the results revealed that if students want to have an efficient practice, they should (a) understand music practice is an accumulation process and practice with several episodes every day, (b) balance between nonplaying practice and playing practice, (c) set a practice plan with some variation. Secondly, music educators should (a) teach practice methods to them within their lessons, (b) consider the age of learners, and utilize developmentally appropriate suggestions, (c) promote high motivation, and keep students as the center of the learning. Finally, if the parents want to support their children to study music, they should (a) have confidence and patience in and with their children, (b) accompany their children during their practice sessions, and (c) build an environment that can help children focus during their practice.
