Increasingly, people are engaging online and can participate in activities like searching for information, communicating with family and friends, and self-expression. However, some populations such as older adults, face barriers to online participation like device cost, access, and learnability, which prevent them from reaping the benefits of Internet use. Moreover, older adults with disabilities (such as vision loss) encounter additional challenges when learning to use and maintaining use of assistive technologies. This thesis further identifies challenges that older adults and older adults with vision impairments face in accessing technology, expressing and communicating online. In this thesis, I explore the potential of landline phones and voice through Interactive Voice Response systems (IVR) as an alternative mechanism for online participation by older adults who face barriers to Internet use.

520 $a Findings from interviews with older adults and older adults with vision loss inform the development of two systems, V-Mail and xPress. Both systems can be accessed using a non-smart phone utilizing IVR. The V-Mail system was deployed to older adults and allowed them to exchange e-mail messages with existing social contacts. The deployment revealed V-Mail was most successful for people without readily available Internet access and for whom Internet use is particularly challenging. Further, the formative work guiding the design of V-Mail and the deployment itself provides empirically driven recommendations for designing voice interfaces for older adults. The xPress system provided a platform for people to blog on Tumblr by phone and was deployed with older adults experiencing vision loss. In contrast to V-Mail, xPress enabled investigation of community discussion and self-expression among a group of unfamiliar peers. Findings showed how xPress was an online community that addressed unmet accessibility needs, enabled connecting with peers in ways that are challenging to do otherwise, and revealed evolving community norms around online sharing and participation for people who are aging with vision loss.
520 $a This dissertation contributes new insights regarding the ways voice interfaces can support not only asynchronous online communication and expression for older adults but also social interaction and community. Also, throughout this dissertation, I argue for designing for late-life development rather than decline and detail opportunities for online systems to better support the dynamic experience of growing older. Lastly, I highlight the importance of not only understanding aging, but the complexity of aging and disability in the context of technology use and system design.
