This phenomenological study examined the social and psychological well-being of aging out of foster care between 18 and 20 years of age. Past literature has shown that youth aging out of foster care are exhibiting risky behaviors. In order to understand what may be contributing to the risky behaviors of those who age out of foster care and address the gap in the literature regarding this phenomenon, this study explored the social and psychological implications of aging out from the perspective of foster care alumni. The central research question used to guide this study asked, "What are the authentic experiences of aging out of foster care and their social and psychological implications?" The methodological approach utilized in this study consisted of interviewing participants. The study includes interviews of 12 foster care alumni between the ages of 18 and 41 years of age. The interview process enabled the participants to share their authentic or lived experiences to allow the researcher to uncover the essence of their individual experiences. Interviews were conducted using either the telephone, FaceTime, or face-to-face engagements. Four themes emerged from the data: (a) transition to independence entailed facing the unknown alone and with trepidation; (b) issues with trusting and depending on others; (c) difficulty developing and maintaining relationships, and (d) anger, defiance, and promiscuity were expressed after aging out of foster care. The findings support the need to reconsider aging out between the ages of 18-20. In addition, programs and services that can teach young people in foster care daily living skills, social skills, and provide counseling as a means of deterring young people from participating in risky behaviors after aging out should be considered by child welfare.
