Improving organizational leadership is a topic that has been thoroughly researched and the results indicate that the enhancement of overall leadership is often linked to the ability to display appropriate leadership behaviors. Elevated physical fitness levels have theoretically been associated with improvements in various leadership behaviors variables; however, no studies have investigated the direct influence of physical fitness on leadership behaviors. A population that relies heavily on possessing the ability to displaying both effective leadership behaviors and high levels of physical fitness are Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) cadets. The purpose of this study was to analyze the influence of physical fitness on leadership behavior of ROTC cadets. Pearson-product moment correlation coefficients was utilized to identify the relationship between physical fitness and leadership behavior of cadets. Backwards stepwise multiple linear regression was employed to examine the influence of physical fitness scores on leadership behavior scores of cadets. A statistically significant (p < .05) relationships was identified between all physical fitness variables and all leadership behavior variables of cadets. Additionally, the regression analyses showed physical fitness served as a moderate predictor of leadership behavior for ROTC cadets. Raw physical fitness scores were the primary predictors of leadership behavior for male cadets. Overall physical fitness was the primary predictor of leadership behavior for female cadets. These outcomes revealed difference in sex specific fitness and leadership performance of ROTC cadets, and further explain the positive relationship and influence of physical fitness on leadership.
