The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore, identify, and illuminate the socio-ecological influences, and other factors that adolescent Hispanic female athletes and non-athletes report that act as barriers to and facilitators of athletic participation. Data collection included in-depth personal interviews of Hispanic females using semi-structured interview protocols with focus groups from two separate segments of the high school Hispanic female population, eight athletes and eight non-athletes who desire to be an athlete but are hindered by one or more barriers. Each of the Hispanic female athletes had an intrinsic pull to participate in athletics that derailed any barrier they were forced to face. Many of the adolescent Hispanic female athletes formulated their identity through their connection to athletic participation. This identity strengthened the athletes' steel in deciding to not be deterred from participating in athletics; the athletes noted that peer encouragement pushed their athletic pursuits even further. Conversely, the non-athletes in the study explained that the barriers that prevented them from participating in athletics were greatly self- induced. This group of respondents had parental backing; however, they often ceded to the pressure of their non-athletic peers and quit participating in athletics. Some of the more traditional barriers such as dropout rates, teenage pregnancy, gang affiliation, and obesity were not as influential as previously assumed. Many parents encouraged their daughters to participate in athletics as an outlet to be used to prevent their daughters from succumbing to stereotyped compulsion. To further examine how the findings generalize to a wider population of Hispanic, female, high school-aged athletes and non-athletes, future research should cast a wider net by replicating the current study but with a greater sampling from populations beyond Texas and include parental views of Hispanic female athletic participation in high school. The information gleaned from the study should be a starting point for future research on the study of athletic participation amongst adolescent Hispanic females. Further exploration of a larger sample size of adolescent Hispanic females is suggested.
