Participation in youth sports has shown large increases along with the prevalence of early sport specialization; and sport specialization affects high school sport programs, due to decreasing participation of multisport athletes, which can cause athletes to miss opportunities to gain important skills that transfer between sports. With the rise in sport specialization, the specific problem of interest was to investigate how sport participation is perceived by coaches and athletic directors. The purpose of this qualitative multiple case study was to investigate the perception of coaches on the influences of sport participation on the DSPM goals. This qualitative study utilized a cross-sectional design, collecting data in one-time period. A case study design was utilized to gather detailed, in-depth data on the perceptions of coaches and athletic directors of sport specialization. The data was collected in a one-time interview with head coaches at six Texas high schools in the 3A, 4A and 5A classifications actively promoting multi-sport participation during the 2016-2017 school year. Each interview was 45-60 minutes, depending upon the information gathered. Interview questions focused on strategies and approaches taken to encourage athletes to participate in multiple sports, identifying any hindrances to employing these approaches, identifying any reasons why athletes choose not to participate in multiple sports. High school coaches of both male and female sports teams were contacted via e-mail using contact information from their individual school websites. By conducting a cross case analysis, the common concepts related to this study were identified at the five research locations. The collection of data took place through semi-structured, open-ended interviews; a qualitative questionnaire; and document collection. Each participant was also interviewed regarding their perceptions of sport specialization. These data was recorded through the use of conversational analysis also known a talk-in interaction. Participants were selected and notified through email lists from the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches (TABC) and the Texas High School Coaches Association (THSCA).
