Small enterprises play a crucial role in the Canadian economy, hiring approximately 70% of private sector employees and contributing just over 40% of gross domestic product. A material portion of that contribution results directly from small business projects. Project management is a critical aspect of how effectively these projects and the resultant innovations are coordinated. This paper broadens the limited knowledge on project management in small businesses. Itexplores how project management tools and techniques are used by small businesses, to gain insights on how use differs based on industry and project success level. Additionally, the paper looks at the relationship between the use of project management tools and project success. A survey was developed to investigate the project management practices of small firms in Ontario Canada, including the use frequency of 69 tools and techniques. There were 154 respondentsfrom a range of industries and employee counts. The study used Mann-Whitney U tests and linear regressions to analyze the data gathered. The results showed that small firms differ in the use frequency of some tools and techniques based on industry and project success status. Additionally, 19 tools demonstrated significant positive relationships with project success. The researcher recommended that project management practitioners experiment with appropriately integrating these tools into their practice to determine if they remit benefits within their business setting. It was concluded that ultimately, small firms require project management tools that suit their unique contextual factors and the nature of the projects they execute.
