Childhood language acquisition has myriad benchmarks that are met before children enter kindergarten. Deaf children born into hearing families have a high risk of developing language deprivation syndrome, as they are not exposed to language the same way as their hearing counterparts. Deaf children are often not meeting language benchmarks in preparation for entering the public-school system. Early intervention programs are few and far between, and the long-term consequences of language deprivation become adult adverse life experiences. Those adult adverse life experiences are now associated with other comorbidity issues in medical and mental health arenas. This study sought to determine if the age of language acquisition impacts the long-term consequences of language deprivation syndrome in adults.
