This critical content analysis examines the representation of Latinx characters and their lived experiences in five picture books published from 2018-2022. These books have been identified by Children's Cooperative Book Center (CCBC) and other acclaimed literary critics as having significant Latinx content. The theoretical framework underpinning this study is the NYS Culturally Responsive Teaching framework (NYSED CR-S framework, 2018). This body of research carefully examines textual content, visual images, semiotic features, and themes that are often represented in Latinx children's literature. The results from this study support the notion that ongoing content analyses of children's books, written and illustrated by Latinos, are necessary to ensure that there are quality texts available to educators who strive to include culturally responsive texts in their classroom library selections. The findings from this content analysis can also be used to argue for the importance of making curricular decisions with careful attention to text selections in early childhood and elementary classrooms. To demonstrate the utility of the rubrics created for this study, this body of research also provides an evaluation tool that educators can use to analyze, disrupt, and affirm how Latinos are venerated in children's literature.
